Required Skills
Load Planning & Route Optimization – finding profitable loads and planning efficient routes. Negotiation Skills – negotiating strong rates with brokers and shippers. Communication – clear, fast communication with drivers, brokers, and management. Market Knowledge – understanding lanes, rates, seasonality, and where freight is paying well. Time Management – staying ahead of pickup/delivery appointments and HOS constraints. Problem Solving – handling breakdowns, delays, cancellations, TONU, detention, and last-minute changes. Attention to Detail – checking rate confirmations, appointments, miles, accessorials, and load requirements. Driver Management – keeping drivers informed, productive, and satisfied. Technology Skills – proficiency with TMS, DAT/Truckstop, ELD systems, tracking platforms, and spreadsheets. Financial Awareness – understanding RPM, fuel cost, deadhead, dispatch percentage, and truck profitability. Compliance Knowledge – basic understanding of HOS, safety requirements, and DOT/FMCSA rules. Proactive Thinking – pre-planning the next load before the truck becomes empty, rather than reacting after delivery.
